Alina is embracing her role as the Sun Summoner in “Shadow and Bone” season two. On Sept. 24, Netflix released the first teaser for the new season at the global fan event Tudum. In it, Alina rejects the idea that she’s just a symbol, Wylan and Nikolai make their big debuts, and the Crows prepare for a fight.
That’s a good thing, because the Darkling isn’t messing around. “Are you willing to sacrifice that which is most precious to you?” he asks in the action-packed trailer.
Netflix’s “Shadow and Bone” premiered in 2021, receiving rave reviews from critics and fans alike. Based on the popular book series by Leigh Bardugo, the show is truly a fantastical adventure that leaves you wanting more with each episode. Seeing that the show draws inspiration from various books in the Grishaverse — including the Shadow and Bone trilogy and the Six of Crows duology — there is already plenty of material to expand upon for the onscreen adaptation, so it makes sense that Netflix renewed the fantasy series for another season.
In June 2021, it was announced that “Shadow and Bone” would return for a second season, along with the main cast, including Jessie Mei Li, Archie Renaux, Freddy Carter, Amita Suman, Kit Young, Danielle Galligan, Calahan Skogman, and Ben Barnes. “I’m honored and thrilled to return to the Grishaverse and continue the stories of these endearing characters,” said executive producer and showrunner Eric Heisserer in a statement, per Variety.
“I’ve been writing in the Grishaverse for nearly ten years now, so I’m thrilled we get to keep this adventure going,” Bardugo added. “There are so many places we’ve barely gotten to visit, and I can’t wait to introduce our audience to more of the saints, soldiers, thugs, thieves, princes, and privateers who make this world so much fun to explore. It’s going to be real magic to see our brilliant, talented cast expand.”
According to the new teaser trailer, fans can also expect to see some exciting characters make their first onscreen appearances, such as Prince Nikolai Lantsov, played by Patrick Gibson; Tamar and Tolya, played by Anna Leong Brophy and Lewis Tan; and Wylan, played by Jack Wolfe. Similar to season one, season two will consist of eight one-hour episodes.
An exact premiere date for the second season has yet to be announced, but at Netflix’s Tudum event, members of the cast did confirm that the show would not officially debut until 2023. Until then, catch a sneak peek of what’s to come down below and stay tuned for more details.
