Shaboozey could not believe what he heard Megan Moroney say about The Carter Family at the American Music Awards on Monday night. Rather, he could not believe what the producers wrote on the teleprompter for Moroney to say about what I think he thought was Beyonce and her family.
The line was not actually about Sasha Fierce but his reaction spoke louder than words!
Beyonce entered the country music space with ‘Cowboy Carter’ in March 2024. ‘Texas Hold ‘Em’ rose to the top of the charts but her album was met with mixed reviews. Some people loved her innovative take on a fast-rising, constantly-evolving genre. Others found it to be boring and/or too unconventional to be played on a loop. Ticket sales from the tour also reflect a lack of interest compared to performances past even though attendees were blown away by the production.
The GRAMMYs ultimately awarded Beyonce and ‘Cowboy Carter’ with the title of ‘Album of the Year’ despite much disagreement from the general public. It was good, but certainly not that good.
Regardless of whether you like the album or not, I think we can all agree on the following statement: Neither Beyonce nor Jay-Z nor Blue Ivy played an integral role in the foundation of country music. The Carter family — in this context — did not create country music.
That leads us to the American Music Awards on Monday night. Megan Moroney and Shaboozey were asked to present an award. Shaboozey first spoke about the role of country music in AMAs’ history and remembered Charley Pride. Moroney then acknowledged “the Carter family, who basically invented country music.” Shaboozey was caught off guard by what she said. He shot her a perplexed side-eye and awkwardly laughed before he continued on with the teleprompter read.

I think his reaction could stem from one of two things.
First and foremost, I am pretty sure Shaboozey heard “the Carter family” and immediately thought of Beyonce and Jay-Z. To say that she was integral in the birth of country music would be crazy. His reaction in that context is completely valid.
However, Moroney (and the teleprompter) was not talking about Beyonce. Rather, American folk group The Carter Family. They were the first vocal group to become “country music” stars and were one of the first groups to record commercially-produced “country music” between 1927 and 1956.
Shaboozey, if he did not get them mixed up with Shawn Carter and Beyonce Knowles, might’ve reacted to the idea that The (actial) Carter Family got all of the credit for the work of others. They were heavily influenced by largely unknown African-American artists like Lesley Riddle and Duford Black. Black was the first black American to perform on the stage at the Grand Ole Opry. Riddle wrote some of The Carter Family’s biggest hits. The family also incorporated elements of Riddle’s guitar technique into its music.
Maybe Shaboozey’s reaction stemmed from the lack of recognition for Riddle and Black. Maybe he thought she was talking about Beyonce. Either way, he was baffled!
