“The ancient Greek poem is one of the foundational texts of Western literature. It tells the story of Odysseus, King of Ithaca, and his perilous journey home after the Trojan War, exploring themes of heroism, loyalty, cunning and the struggle against divine will. The tale includes iconic stories like Odysseus’ encounters with the Cyclops Polyphemus, the Sirens and the witch-goddess Circe, culminating in a reunion with his wife Penelope.” [via Deadline]
The Odyssey is set to be Christopher Nolan’s first film since winning the Academy Awards for Best Director and Best Picture for his work on the 2023 World War II drama Oppenheimer.
“Christopher Nolan’s next film The Odyssey is a mythic action epic shot across the world using brand new IMAX film technology. The film brings Homer’s foundational saga to IMAXfilm screens for the first time and opens in theaters everywhere on July 17, 2026,” Universal Pictures said of the film when it was announced.
In addition to Oppenheimer, Nolan is known for his work directing the films Tenet, Dunkirk, Interstellar, The Dark Knight Rises, Inception, The Dark Knight, The Prestige, Batman Begins, Insomnia, and Memento. Despite being famed for the epic scale of his filmmaking, The Odyssey has the potential to be the acclaimed director’s biggest project yet.
