The first trailer for Spaceman, the upcoming film from Chernobyl director Johan Renck has been released. The film stars Adam Sandler in the lead role alongside Carey Mulligan and Paul Dano.
Spaceman sees Sandler showing off his dramatic chops, which is something that the beloved 57-year-old does every few years to remind everyone that he’s not just a comedic actor.
Here is the official synopsis for Spaceman, which will be released on March 1, via Netflix:
Six months into a solitary research mission to the edge of the solar system, an astronaut, Jakub (Adam Sandler), realizes that the marriage he left behind might not be waiting for him when he returns to Earth.
Desperate to fix things with his wife, Lenka (Carey Mulligan), he is helped by a mysterious creature from the beginning of time he finds hiding in the bowels of his ship. Hanuš (voiced by Paul Dano) works with Jakub to make sense of what went wrong before it is too late.
In addition to the starring trio of Sandler, Mulligan, and Dano, Spaceman — which is based on the 2017 novel Spaceman of Bohemia — also stars Kunal Nayyar, Lena Olin, and Isabella Rossellini.
Spaceman marks Sandler’s first drama role since playing Stanley Sugarman in the 2022 Netflix film Hustle. Prior to that, he received critical acclaim for his role in the 2019 Safdie brothers film Uncut Gems.
As for Mulligan, she’s likely to be nominated for Best Actress at the Academy Awards for her performance as Felicia Montealegre in Bradley Cooper’s Maestro. Dano has also been on an impressive run in recent years, starring in films such as The Batman, The Fabelmans, and Dumb Money.
In addition to directing five episodes of Chernobyl, Renck has also directed episodes of shows such as Bloodline, The Walking Dead, Breaking Bad, Vikings, Halt and Catch Fire, and more.
