Serena Williams did not purposely alter her complexion. The 43-year-old tennis legend vehemently denied any kind of skin bleaching procedure after a video on social media sparked widespread speculation about her pigmentation.

She offered a response to the “haters” while doing a makeup tutorial for her cosmetics brand, Wyn Beauty. It was the perfect opportunity to kill two birds with one stone.

This unusual conjecture began last week, two days prior to Thanksgiving. Williams posted a video of herself at a school event with her husband, Alexis Ohanian, and their two daughters. Some people were concerned with her health. Others were more confused by how she looked than worried.

The video led to accusations of skin bleaching. Williams was subject to gossip about the medical procedure, which uses chemicals to lighten the skin by reducing its melanin concentration.

All of the rumors ultimately proved to be exactly that— rumors. They are untrue.

Williams went live on Instagram on Monday night to promote her skincare brand. She addressed the claims about her complexion, which she says was nothing more than a product of lighting and makeup.

And then I put just that neutral color, that is actually my skin color, and no, for you haters out there, I do not bleach my skin […]

There is a thing called sunlight, and in that sunlight, you get different colors.

The video in question was filmed at her daughter’s play. Serena Williams explained that she was volunteering for the production and was wearing “stage makeup” when she recorded the now-viral clip.

Yes, I’m calling you out on this because it is ridiculous […] Everyone’s like, “Oh, she bleached her skin.” I’m a dark Black woman, and I love who I am, and I love how I look.

All of the skin-bleaching chatter was frustrating. It’s not that Williams has any problem with the procedure in general. It’s just not for her. She is not interested.

And if people do it, that’s their thing, and they have every opportunity and they should. I don’t judge but you guys do. But that’s what this world is about, and I stay in my lane — the non-judgy one — and I keep it. But no, I actually don’t bleach my skin, so can we just kinda clear that up?

— Serena Williams

Enough said! Consider it cleared up. Serena Williams did not bleach her skin to change her complexion.

A harmless video became the talk of the internet, which always results in wild conspiracy theories. The false judgement clearly got to the 23-time Grand Slam champion to the point that she chose to address it. To do so while also promoting her own line of cosmetics was brilliant.
