Another chaotic year brings us to what might be another chaotic Oscars, as we prepare to learn who will be the nominees for the 96th Academy Awards.
With some of the best films of 2023 in contention for the top prize, it’s literally anyone’s game: Some of today’s greatest auteurs, including Martin Scorsese, Christopher Nolan, and Greta Gerwig, released powerful films that make them eligible in both the Best Picture and Best Director categories. (Who would have thought, a year ago, that the Barbenheimer phenomenon would extend through awards season?)
In addition, the Lead Actor race includes Cillian Murphy being recognized for his career-defining performance as Oppenheimer in Oppenheimer, while beloved veteran Paul Giamatti may be able to rack up another win for his work in The Holdovers. Lead Actress, meanwhile, will likely include a nomination for Lily Gladstone, the secret to Killers of the Flower Moon’s success, as well as recognition for Poor Things’s Emma Stone and Barbie’s Margot Robbie as two very different man-made creations.
The Supporting Actor race includes Robert Downey Jr. potentially picking up a third lifetime nomination for bullying ol’ Oppy in Oppenheimer, and Da’Vine Joy Randolph and Danielle Brooks are likely Supporting Actress nominees for their work in (respectively) The Holdovers and The Color Purple.
And musically, Consequence Composer of 2023 Ludwig Göransson is a frontrunner for his Oppenheimer score, while Barbie looks likely to dominate the Original Song category with multiple nominations. (The only question is: Will it be Dua Lipa, Billie Eilish, or Ryan Gosling who gets shut out?)
This article will be updated live as Zazie Beetz and Jack Quaid announce the nominees on Tuesday, January 23rd at 8:30 a.m. ET/5:30 a.m. PT. You can watch the announcement below:
