A passenger on the Royal Caribbean Icon of the Seas is being treated for injuries by the boat’s medical staff after falling from a waterslide onto the deck below. The incident occurred when a glass pane broke on the slide, sending the passenger falling.

Video of the incident shows horrified onlookers yelling “stop the slide!” as crew members on the ship attempt to communicate with slide workers.

“Our team provided medical care to an adult guest when acrylic glass broke off a water slide as the guest passed through the slide,” a spokesperson told Storyful via the New York Post. “The guest is being treated for his injuries.”

Of course, the slide is now closed for the remainder of the cruise’s duration. However, Royal Caribbean did not immediately return to its main port in Miami.

“Oh my god, someone fell out of the slide,” a passenger can be heard saying in the background of the video as panicked fellow passengers yell out.

Royal Caribbean’s Water Slide Has Come Under Scrutiny In The Past

Royal Caribbean did not state how significant the man’s injuries are.

The Icon of the Seas first launched in December of 2022, and it is one of the two largest cruise ships in the world, alongside its sister ship, Star of the Seas.

The slide, named the “Frightening Bolt,” is one of six water slides on the ship, according to Travel and Tour World

“The attraction boasts some of the most daring features at sea, including the tallest water slide drop, a trapdoor launch, and a full 360° loop,” the site states. “These high-adrenaline attractions are designed to thrill passengers and serve as a central draw for vacationers seeking the ultimate in waterpark excitement.”

But the rides clearly do not come without danger.

“The high-speed nature of these rides, combined with the force of the water and the sheer height of the drops, places significant stress on the materials used,” Travel and Tour World states. “The acrylic panel that shattered mid-ride was meant to protect riders while offering a clear view of the water below. But the failure of this panel raises questions about its material integrity, installation, and the frequency of maintenance checks.”

Thankfully, the passenger is reportedly in stable condition. But things could have been far, far worse in an already scary scene.
