Scarlett Johannson Explains Why She Doesn't Take Fan Photos

Actress Scarlett Johansson recently revealed that she declines to take photos with fans outside of work appearances. In her cover story for InStyle the Oscar-nominated actress relayed that she intentionally sets a boundary with her fans, separating her private and work life: “I like to be in my own thoughts that have nothing to do with what other people think of me.”

“It really offends a lot of people. It doesn’t mean I’m not appreciative, of course, that people are fans, or happy to see me,” Johansson explained. “But I always say to people, ‘I’m not working,’ [which means] I don’t want to be identified as being in this time and place with you. I’m doing my own thing.. I like to be in my own thoughts that have nothing to do with what other people think of me. I don’t like being self-conscious.” She made note that if she’s on a red carpet or leaving a talk show appearance, she will snap photo ops with those requesting them.

She continued on, noting her children’s safety is a major priority: “My family is very precious to me, as is their privacy. The anonymity of my children is very precious to me… The thing about being a public figure is that the idea of being recognizable and celebrated feels fun, but then you can never stuff it back in the bottle.”

“I think preserving that for as long as possible until it’s someone’s choice, that’s the choice I make as far as my kids go. I want to go and buy my own shit at Duane Reade.”

Johansson pointed out pop star Chappell Roan’s own issues with fan requests, who came under fire for setting boundaries with increasingly intrusive fans last year. “Like everybody else, I fell in love with her over the summer. She’s very outspoken about how hard it’s been to adjust to fame.”

Johansson has been busy at work with developing her directorial debut Eleanor the Great starring June Squibb. “It’s so exciting to be 40 and learn a new thing. Now I know how to make a movie like this,” she said, reminiscing on a conversation with husband and Saturday Night Live writer and “Weekend Update” host Colin Jost. “I know how to finish it. The process of sound mixing and coloring and editing—I didn’t know that before. And now I know how to do it.” No release date has been confirmed as of March 2025. The actress and director is also set to star in Jurassic World Rebirth alongside Theo James, Mahershala Ali, and Jonathan Bailey, which hits theaters July 2nd.
