Despite not being in ‘Tornado Alley,’ Florida ranked 6th among all states last year for most tornado activity with 103 tornadoes and 8 fatalities, which was more tornadoes than Kansas and Oklahoma. That activity was mostly attributed to tornadoes which popped up around hurricanes making landfall but Florida still has regular tornado activity as was the case yesterday in Pinellas County when a tornado touched down in Largo and flipped a house.

Largo, Florida sits north of St. Petersburg, Florida between Tampa Bay and the Gulf. It’s a peninsula within a peninsula (Florida itself) and sitting between the Gulf and Tampa Bay, two large bodies of water, occasionally leads to some truly intense weather like what happened yesterday.

There are actually two pretty surreal videos. This first was widely shared by meteorologist Denis Phillips and the second shows sheet metal raining from the skies. First up… a house flipping over sideways from the Florida tornado captured on a Ring Doorbell Camera:

We don’t know if anyone was inside the home. Presumably not or that likely would have been reported. Even still, I can’t help but imagine what it would have been like if you were in a home and it suddenly got flipped over sideways and then back again moments later.

Florida Tornado Flips House Sideways, Sheet Metal Rains From The Sky

A second set of clips from Spectrum Bay News 9 show the Florida tornado leading to sheet metal raining from the sky. This is one of the most dangerous situations I’ve ever seen in a tornado. Literal metal projectiles flying through the sky as someone is filming:

Weirdly, there were a lot of clips showing different angles of the debris flying around. Look at the scope of how much debris is in the air here. At first glance it didn’t seem like much but then the camera pans out to show more:

Be safe out there people. Regardless of where you are at in the country. Late Spring and Summer brings violent weather to so much of the country. If there’s lightning in the area, head indoors. Seek shelter if a violent storm is inbound. Common sense is not common enough these days but please, be safe.
