“Ransom Canyon” is a new romantic western TV series, which premiered on Thursday, April 17th on Netflix.

Ransom Canyon is where love, loss, and loyalty collide beneath the crimson mesas of Texas Hill Country. It is based on the book series of the same name by Jodi Thomas.

The synopsis is: Secrets, love and lies intertwine as rancher Staten Kirkland (Josh Duhamel) follows his heart, fights to protect his land and investigates a painful personal loss. It finds three ranching families all coming together.

Josh Duhamel delivers a commanding performance as Staten and his affecting rapport with Minka Kelly’s character, Quinn O’Grady, allows for more resonance.

Minka Kelly is appealing in this series as Quinn, to the point where it feels like watching “NYPD Blue” all over again, where she is reminiscent of a young Kim Delaney, and that ought to be taken as a compliment.

Eoin Macken pulls off the crowning performance of his career as the nefarious Davis Collins, where he plays a character that everyone will love to hate; however, Macken does have a heart under that tough boy image and he has some really moving scenes with his on-screen son Reid Collins (played by Andrew Liner), which are sentimental and they will certainly move the audience on an emotional level.

By the same token, Jack Schumacher also delivers triumphant acting work as Yancy, where in many instances, he is a revelation. Schumacher deserves to become the next Jesse Kove (“Cobra Kai”) in the industry.

Veteran actor James Brolin is a force of nature as Cap Fuller, and he manages to steal every scene he is in.

Lizzy Greene is lovely as Lauren Brigman while Garrett Wareing is also memorable as Lucas.

The inclusion of Kate Burton in this series as a special guest is sheer bliss.

Each actor has his or her own characterization, and they bring something unique to the table. The multiple twists and turns will keep people at the edge of their seats.

Without giving anything away, this western saga needs to be experienced by all.

The Verdict

Overall, “Ransom Canyon” is a riveting and gritty new series on Netflix that will certainly sustain the one’s attention for its entire duration.

Strong performances led by Josh Duhamel, Eoin Macken, and Minka Kelly give this show its beating heart, and hopefully, there will be a second season and beyond.

It is one of the those shows that viewers will want to instantly binge in one or two sittings, thus becoming the audience’s guilty pleasure.

It has elements of “Yellowstone” meets “Ride” (Hallmark series) meets “Blue Ridge” (Johnathon Schaech series) coupled with the atmospherics of “True Grit.” “Ransom Canyon” garners 4.5 out of 5 stars. Well done.
