A fascinating new report that has compiled recent quotes from Joe Rogan’s sphere of podcasters and comedians seems to suggest that those he convinced to move to Texas don’t seem to be enjoying life in the Lone Star State all that much.
According to the US Census, in 2023, 94,000 Californians moved to Texas in 2023, which ranked it as the number one location for people who moved out of the state.
Austin, in particular — given its art and music culture, certainly relative to the other major Texas cities — has seen in influx of California transplants thanks in no small part to constant promotion from famous resident Joe Rogan.
Rogan has been selling Austin to his audience for a few years now and has seemingly convince some of his pals to make the move. A report from Chron, however, has noticed that many of them don’t seem thrilled down south.
None of Joe Rogan’s friends who have moved to Texas seem to be liking it very much
Brendan Schaub:
“I miss my community and my routine,” Brendan Schaub, who added that Austin “is no LA,” said of his move from California to Texas earlier this month.
Shane Gillis:
“Texas f—— blows. It’s hot as f—. The second we ran out of power, the house was 90 degrees and bugs came in immediately,” Gillis said on Andrew Schulz’s podcast, with the host adding “They’re on their own power grid, like f—— idiots.”
Tim Dillon:
“It’s a soulless city that should be burned to the ground and everyone that lives here should be summarily executed. It is not the ‘live music capital of America,’ it’s three heroin addicts busking with guitars. There is zero talent here in any capacity. There’s three restaurants that are good and I’ve been to all of them twice,” Tim Dillon said last year on a podcast with Whitney Cummings.
“He’d rather have someone that makes bespoke knives on, than you, right?” Cummings replied ”They’re just hoping the people he’s flying miss their flight and they need someone at the last minute.”
“Yes, the taxes are better. And yes, there are benefits to not being in LA. And yes, LA is a host of problems. But I moved here because, first and foremost, I said, something new will be good. I was wrong,” he added
Rogan moved from California to Texas in 2020, citing issues with pandemic restrictions, taxes, and cost of living. In 2022, Rogan purchased The Ritz theater in Austin and opened The Comedy Mothership comedy club.
