Quentin Tarantino has abandoned his upcoming film, The Movie Critic, and is no longer planning to make it. Now, the director is back to brainstorming what his 10th and final film will be.
The news broke on Wednesday, with unnamed sources confirming Tarantino’s reversal. “He simply changed his mind,” Deadline reported, with sources suggesting that he “had a change of heart… [and] is going back to the drawing board to figure out what that final movie will be.”
Set to be his grand finale, The Movie Critic had been in pre-production for over a year, and even had big name stars like Brad Pitt attached to it (in fact, Pitt was even going to reprise his Once Upon a Time in Hollywood role, Cliff Booth, according to The Hollywood Reporter). The film was to be set in California in 1977, with a plot following “a guy who really lived, but was never really famous, and he used to write movie reviews for a porno rag.”
The “final film” element to Tarantino’s next project is a self-imposed creative decision on the director’s part. For years, he’s mentioned that he plans on retiring from film-making, hoping to avoid being seen as “out of touch.” Once he “retires,” he’ll likely settle into a life of new creative projects, like books, TV, or stage productions.
Before he gets to retire, though, he’s got one more film to churn out… only time will tell what it’ll be about. In the meantime, be sure to revisit our ranking of Tarantino’s films from worst to best.
