Portugal. The Man have returned with a new song titled “V.I.S.”
Spanning nearly four minutes, the single begins with a cool, dusty electric guitar lead line, bending in and out of blue notes over a steady beat carried by the rhythm section. On the verses, John Gourley ruminates on childhood fears and memories, with allusions to under-bed monsters, graveyards, his father’s hat, and more.

On the choruses, the arrangement rips open, with a sludgy guitar chugging out the progression as Gourley delivers lyrics like “Don’t get too high your head gets dumb/ The calico cat got your tongue/ Don’t listen when the whisper in your ear/ How could you throw it all away.”
A bridge arrives after the midpoint, colored by chorused guitars, fanfarish countermelodies, and references to “Shatner in the clouds” and a feeling of “immeasurable sadness while he’s lookin down” (possible references to William Shatner’s feelings of grief after going to space), after which the sludge of the chorus returns to back up a blistering guitar solo.
