A Pomeranian is probably one of the last breeds most people would turn to if they were in the market for a guard dog. However, one Very Good Boy in Canada stepped up in the clutch after a bear invaded his home in search of some food.
People who live in an area that’s home to its fair share of bears know they need to take some precautions to avoid attracting the attention of the animals that don’t have regard for (nor the ability to comprehend the concept of) trespassing and personal property laws.
Many bears consequently won’t think twice about rummaging through trash cans, breaking into cars, or even making their way into a house on their quest for an easy meal—including one in Canada that recently made its way into a home in British Columbia.
However, it did not anticipate encountering the six-pound ball of furry fury that made it beat a hasty retreat.
A Pomeranian managed to scare away a bear that invaded its home in Canada
British Columbia is believed to be home to upwards of 160,000 black bears (although those numbers are from a study that’s close to 25 years old), and fully-grown male members of that species usually weigh in at around 400 pounds.
Pomeranians, on the other hand, are one of the smaller dog breeds in existence, but they also have a tendency to severely overestimate their ability to go toe-to-toe with less diminutive foes based on how feisty they can be.
That certainly applies to Scout, a six-pound Pomeranian who lives with Kayla Kleine and her husband in West Vancouver. According to Global News, he had some food waiting for him in a bowl on the morning of August 4th when a bear that entered the home through a door that was left open decided to help itself to the awaiting meal.
The animal subsequently began to roam around before attracting the attention of Scout, who barked up a storm and chased the intruder out of the house and over a fence in the backyard.
Kleine told he outlet she grabbed some bear spray and ran after Scout before discovering he’d successfully warded the bear (which appeared to be on the younger side) off of the property, “I was surprised but he’s also scary when he’s mad so I could see him going full speed at the bear. ”
