In Case #1,289,877 of why flying is the worst, passengers on board Delta Flight 2348 on Saturday had their flight delayed by a couple of pigeons. No, the pigeons didn’t crack a window and get sucked into the engine. They were inside the cabin with the passengers, flying around.
The Delta flight, which was scheduled to travel from Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport to Dane County Regional Airport in Madison, Wisconsin, was first delayed when a pigeon flew through the passenger cabin while the crew was preparing for take-off. That bird was eventually caught and removed from the plane by a baggage handler.
Unfortunately, the story wasn’t over yet. A second pigeon appeared in the cabin filled with 119 passengers after the plane left the terminal. Naturally, this wild scene was caught on video by a passenger.
“It was on the floor, strutting down the aisle. Somebody near me reached down to try and grab it, and that’s when the chaos happened because the bird just launched into flight,” that passenger, Tom Caw, told the Minnesota Star-Tribune.
Before finally taking off, Caw added that a flight attendant actually asked the passengers to check for more birds.
“Everybody started laughing,” Caw said. “And then she waited for a second and she said, ‘Okay, yes, it’s funny. But seriously, check to see if there are any birds under your seats or in your bags.’”
Caw described exactly what happened and how the problem was resolved alongside his video of the pigeon on his Instagram account.
“When I boarded Delta Flight 2348 at MSP tonight, I overheard another passenger tell a flight attendant there was a pigeon on the plane. The pilot got on the mic and confirmed a pigeon was on the plane, and said he had no experience with this situation. Baggage handlers boarded and carried the pigeon off. People applauded. A young girl asked if she could pet it,” he wrote.
“The plane eventually pulled away and began taxiing to the runway, and then another pigeon emerged! This is my video of it flying through the cabin. It was caught, and we returned to the gate. Pilot said when he radioed the control tower about us coming back due to a pigeon, the guy said that was a first for him. Pilot told him it was the second time for him—the first being half an hour earlier. Another baggage handler boarded and removed it — still alive. My guess is the pigeons were tired of flying and wanted snacks. They didn’t know this flight to [MSP] is too short for Delta to offer beverage/snack service.”
“Delta appreciates the careful actions of our people and our customers to safely remove two birds from the aircraft prior to departure and we apologize to our customers for the delay in their travel,” the airline said in statement about the inceident.
