The two internationally acclaimed stars join the live-action adaptation of the series whose protagonist, Aang, is played by Filipino-Canadian actor Gordon Cormier
MANILA, Philippines – The second season of Netflix’s live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender has wrapped filming, and fans in the Philippines have even more reason to be excited as two award-winning Filipinos join its cast.
The show announced via its social media pages on Wednesday, May 21, that Golden Globe nominee Dolly de Leon will portray Lo and Li, the elderly twins who serve as fire-bending mentors to Princess Azula in the Fire Nation.
In a statement released through her agency, de Leon described the opportunity as “a dream come true” in her career.
“I’m extremely excited and honored to be a part of an iconic live action version of an animated cult classic. It’s my first time playing twins, which is the best fun in a creative process,” she shared.
Joining her is Filipino-American actor Jon Jon Briones, who will take on the role of Piandao, the master swordsman of the White Lotus who eventually becomes Sokka’s mentor.
He is set to appear in the third and final season of the series, which is currently in production.
Both De Leon and Briones are Filipino acting legends. De Leon gained international recognition for her role in Triangle of Sadness, which won the prestigious Palme d’Or at Cannes. Recently, she made her debut in the global series Nine Perfect Strangers with Nicole Kidman.
Meanwhile, Briones, a screen and stage actor, was nominated at 2015 Olivier Awards as Best Actor for his role as The Engineer in Miss Saigon. He also starred in other American series hits like Ratched and American Horror Story.
They will join Filipino-Canadian actor Gordon Cormier, whose mother is from Santa Rosa, Laguna, who plays the series’ protagonist, Aang.
The other actors who are recently added to the casts are Madison Hu (as Fei), Dichen Lachman (Yangchen), Lily Gao (as Ursa), Terry Chen (as Jeong Jeong), and Tantoo Cardinal (as Hama).
The series’ first season premiered on Netflix in 2024. It follows the original story of Aang, a young air Nomad who must master all the four elements to defeat the Firelord and end the war he wages against other nations. – with reports from Kevin Ian Lampayan/Rappler.com
