Peter Jackson is one of the most successful directors of the 21st century. And yet, despite that, he doesn’t direct all that much these days.

Jackson, who won Best Picture at the Academy Awards for directing The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, hasn’t directed a feature film since The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, which was released in 2014, now over 10 years ago.

When asked if he’s retired from feature filmmaking, the acclaimed 63-year-old director clarified that he’s not retired and has instead been focusing on writing, producing, and reviving the Moa, an extinct New Zealand bird that can stand as tall as 10-feet.

According to Jackson, bringing the Moa back to life would be more exciting than any film he’s ever made or likely will make.

“I’m at the moment writing three different scripts. We are producing and have been writing ‘The Hunt for Gollum,’ which Andy Serkis is going to direct next year. I’ve enjoyed working on docs, whether they show I’ve grown old or not, and obviously the ‘Get Back,’ The Beatles project. I’ve enjoyed doing various things with The Beatles, which is great, and that’ll probably carry on,” Jackson said in a recent interview with ScreenRant.

“To me, de-extincting the Moa [bird] would be just as exciting, if not more exciting, than any film I could possibly make. I’ve made a lot of movies, but to see the giant Moa brought back would be a level of excitement that I think would supersede anything at this point in time.”

The Moa, a flightless bird that was native to New Zealand, went extinct within 100 years of humans settling the island, around the year 1350.

As for the The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, the Andy Serkis-directed film is currently scheduled to be released in theaters in 2027. While plot details are sparse, IMDB says the film will “explore Gollum’s unfinished business.” Gollum, of course, was famously played by Andy Serkis with motion capture.
