From June 24-26, Ozomatli stopped by New York’s Blue Note Jazz Club for three performances in the final week of the sprawling citywide Blue Note Jazz Festival. In its performances, the LA-bred sextet showcased its incomparable blend of styles, touching on notes from such diverse influences as salsa, funk, cumbia, hip-hop and hard bop in a thrilling set teeming with the group’s signature passion, energy and experimentalism. While these shows arrived as some of the final performances in the Blue Note Jazz Festival–which will come to a close with sets from Chief Adjuah, Brass Queens, Harlem Gospel Choir and Joey Alexander through the weekend–they mark only the outset for Ozomatli’s summer tour. After taking the stage at The State Theater in Falls Church, Va. tonight, the group will plot 14 further performances through the end of August, including sets at high-profile festivals such as The Capitol Groove, Mammoth Festival of Beers and Bluesapalooza, Santa Cruz Mountain Sol Festival and Four Corners Folk Festival.
