New YouTube update removes support for newest iPod Touch

YouTube has updated its mobile app yet again, this time removing support for one of Apple’s classic devices: the iPod Touch.

Back when dedicated media players were all the rage, Apple’s iPod Touch was by far the most popular touchscreen device available.

Between its launch in 2007 and May 2013, Apple sold over 100M units to customers all over the world. They were a great way for kids to watch videos and listen to music while on the go without a smartphone, until Apple discontinued the device on May 10, 2022.

Apple hasn’t updated the device past iOS 15, and on Tuesday, June 3, the lack of updates caused iPod Touch users to lose access to one of the most popular apps.

YouTube app no longer works on iPod Touch

According to MacRumors, the most recent YouTube update requires iOS 16 to install and run the app, which means it’ll no longer run for anyone still using the classic touchscreen device.

You can still access the Google-owned video platform through its browser, however, but the experience isn’t nearly the same.

The iPod Touch isn’t the only device that’s lost support for the app, either, as the iPhone 6S, 7, and first-generation iPhone SE no longer work with it. Those using an older iPad are facing a similar issue, as the iPad Air 2 and iPad Mini 4 are no longer supported as well.

Outside of removing support for older devices, YouTube has been hard at work adding features to its website and mobile app.

In May, YouTube revealed that a new feature is coming to Shorts that allows you to use Google Lens to help identify something in the video you’re watching. The company is also working on new ways to show ads to users, including using Gemini AI to identify “peak points” in videos.
