New Twitch feature makes gifted subs more expensive

Twitch has released a new toggle for streamers to turn off the ability for viewers to buy bundles of gifted subscriptions at a discount.

Over the last few years, Twitch has made quite a few changes to its subscription service that monetized creators can offer.

The Amazon-owned platform has raised the price of subs on desktop and mobile multiple times, but Twitch also occasionally runs discounts for people to buy them in bundles of five or more.

Purchases made with these discounts change the amount of money that streamers receive from subs, however, as Twitch adjusts the 50% split to match the lower price when they run discount events.

On Tuesday, March 18, Twitch announced that streamers now have the ability to turn off these discounts, meaning viewers won’t be able to save money when buying subs in bulk.

Twitch adds a way to turn off sub-discounts

According to Twitch’s support page for Discount Gift Subscriptions, the toggle to turn off the lower price has been added to the creator dashboard.

Here’s how to turn off discounts on gifted subs:

  • Go to your Creator Dashboard
  • On the left side, select Monetization and then Subscriptions
  • Select the toggle for ‘Shared Gift Subs Discounts’

Twitch also revealed that the only discount event that the toggle won’t affect will be SUBtember, as Twitch and sponsors subsidize the full cost of the subscriptions.

“We consider SUBtember to be a special, longer community celebration event and as in past years, Twitch and sponsors will subsidize the full cost of the promotion, meaning streamers will be paid based on the full value of a purchased subscription, despite the user getting a discount. This is unique to SUBtember,” they said in the blog post.

Subtember is one of the most popular events on the Amazon-owned platform and has helped fuel some massive subscriber count records. Back in 2024, VTuber Ironmouse managed to overtake Kai Cenat’s previous record of over 320k subs, although he regained the title just a few months later.
