The story of The Mandalorian and Grogu (aka Baby Yoda) is headed to the big screen: Disney and Lucasfilm have announced a new feature film starring the warrior and his traveling companion.
Simply titled The Mandalorian & Grogu, the movie will go into production this year. Jon Favreau, who created the Pedro Pascal-starring Disney+ series The Mandalorian, will direct and produce alongside Kathleen Kennedy and Dave Filoni. The film’s theatrical release date is currently unknown.
“I have loved telling stories set in the rich world that George Lucas created,” Favreau said in a statement. “The prospect of bringing the Mandalorian and his apprentice Grogu to the big screen is extremely exciting.”
Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy added, “Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni have ushered into Star Wars two new and beloved characters, and this new story is a perfect fit for the big screen.”
The Season 3 finale of The Mandalorian aired in April 2023. While the show hasn’t officially been canceled yet, Consequence Senior Entertainment Editor Liz Shannon Miller noted the episode “plays very much like a series finale.”
Meanwhile, Season 2 of Ahsoka, which is set in the same time period as The Mandalorian, is also currently in development.
