Titan: The OceanGate Disaster, a documentary about the doomed OceanGate Titanic submersible that imploded and killed five people in June 2023, was released on Netflix this week. The documentary includes newly-released audio of late OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush firing an employee who voiced concern over the mission’s safety.

In the Netflix documentary, newly-released audio reveals that OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush fired a longtime employee after he raised concerns about the Titanic submersible’s safety.

In the clip, the concerned employee is heard voicing his concerns about the OceanGate mission’s safety and his displeasure with Stockton’s reaction to it.

“This is the first time I’ve ever put on paper any health and safety concerns, and my god, Stockton, you know on every expedition we’ve had, we’ve had issues. And I’ve been with you every single expedition,” he says.

“I don’t see we have a choice,” Rush says when the employee asks if he’s going to fire him.

Rush ultimately fired the employee, forged forward with the mission despite the safety issues and got five people — Paul-Henri Nargeolet, a French deep-sea explorerl Hamish Harding, a British businessman; Shahzada Dawood, a Pakistani-British businessman; and Dawood’s son, Suleman — killed in the process.

“I don’t want anybody in this company who is uncomfortable with what we’re doing. We’re doing weird shit here and I am definitely out of the mold. There’s no question. I’m doing things that are completely non-standard,” Rush says in the documentary.

“And I’m sure the industry thinks I’m an f—— idiot. That’s fine. They’ve been doing that for eight years. And I’m going to continue on the way I’m doing but I’m ot going to force people to join my religion if they don’t want to.”

What the documentary ultimately reveals is that Rush was a man driven to prove himself right and others wrong at any and all costs, including the safety of himself and others.
