Nebraska was pummeled with some truly nasty weather this week. Towns in eastern Nebraska were hit by a storm cell on Thursday which launched tornadoes and dropped softball-sized hail in parts.

Footage of the extreme weather conditions across eastern Nebraska and western Iowa went viral across social media with people from around the nation stunned by the violent storms.

One of those clips was posted to TikTok by @chelsipettit and has the caption ‘huge hail storm in Nebraska tonight’ along with ‘softball sized hail tonight.’ Some of the commenters nitpicked at the ‘softball-sized hail’ being smaller than a softball but the semantics of this are foolish. These are massive balls of hail capable of causing extreme damage to roofs, screens, cars, and anything else they come in contact with. In the clip, you can see the hail destroying the siding of the home:

Another video from Seward, Nebraska shared by Live Storms Media shows a powerful tornado touching down and gobbling up anything in its path. Thankfully, this is a sparsely populated region of the country and there wasn’t a town in the way of the tornado:

Spring often brings violent storms to the heartland of America and this Spring has been no different. Storm chaser Brandon Copic recently captured stunning footage of narrowly escaping the path of a massive tornado in Arkansas and that was just days before tornadoes pummeled the Nashville area.

I am struck with how that first video above of the Nebraska storm with softball-sized hail was filmed… If I knew there were tornadoes in the area and saw hail like that I’d be sprinting for the basement. But I’m a born-and-raised Floridian and tornadoes are pretty foreign to me. Whereas last Summer when the eye of hurricane Milton passed directly over my house upon landfall my entire neighborhood was outside filming ‘the calm’ inside the center of the storm. We all fear the weather we are not accustomed to.
