Napster has been sold for $207,000,000 to a 3D technology company more than 20 years after it closed for good.
In the late 1900s, Napster was one of the most popular ways for people to download songs without having to pay a dime before it’s inevitable closure in 2001 due to legal battles.
The brand itself never died, but many people across the internet forgot about its existence over the last quarter-century.
Until Tuesday, March 25, that is, when it was revealed that Napster has been purchased for a staggering $207 Million.
Napster purchased by 3D Tech company
As reported by CNBC, Napster has been acquired by Infinite Reality, a 3D Technology company that is looking to create virtual 3D spaces that allow music fans to enjoy concerts or listening parties together.
The company also wants to use it as a way for musicians to sell physical and virtual merchandise.
“When we think about clients who have audiences — influencers, creators — I think it’s very important that they have a connected space that’s around music and musical communities,” said CEO John Acunto. “We just don’t see anybody in the streaming space creating spaces for music.
“I think there’s no better name than Napster to disrupt.”
According to the report, Napster still owns the licenses to stream millions of tracks – which Infinite Reality now owns.
News of the purchase went viral across social media, with many people surprised the brand still exists in 2025.
“I didn’t even know it was still around. Oh, the memories,” one user replied.
Another commented: “Had no idea it still existed. I got booted from it back in the day for downloading one Metallica song lol.”
“Whaaaatt? they still existed? and get paid for $207 million?!!!” a third user responded.
This is just the latest massive purchase that garnered a reaction from users on social media. In March, PepsiCo purchased “healthy soda” brand Poppi for $2bn – leaving fans worried about the drinks future.
