My Morning Jacket have announced their new album, is, and unveiled the record’s lead single, “Time Waited.”
Due on March 21st via ATO Records, is features 10 new songs produced by Brendan O’Brien, marking the end of a long streak of self-produced albums. Speaking about the collaboration in a statement, frontman Jim James (who produced the majority of the band’s previous releases) explained that O’Brien revamped the album-making process.

“Up until now I’ve never been able to let go and allow someone else to steer the ship,” James said. “It almost felt like an out-of-body experience to step back and give control over to someone who’s far more accomplished and made so many more records than us, but in the end I was able to enjoy the process maybe more than I ever have before.”
As for the songs themselves, they were forged in two “exploratory” writing sessions, and “came into existence out of an attempt to connect with something beyond the human experiment,” according to James.
The single, “Time Waited,” reflects that, starting with a meditative piano loop before blossoming into an anthemic indie rock arrangement, with a signature soaring Jim James vocal line on the bridge. Lyrically, James explained that it’s “about how flexible time is, how we can bend and warp time, especially if we are following our hearts, the universe and time itself can flow to work with us.” Watch the Danny Clinch-directed music video for the song below.
