After over a decade in production, the Tony Award-winning musical Wicked is finally set to hit the big screen on November 27, 2024.
Universal Studios released a new trailer for the movie that shows a star-studded cast featuring Cynthia Erivo (Elphaba), Ariana Grande (Glinda) and Jeff Goldblum (The Wizard of Oz).
Universal announced initial plans for the film all the way back in 2012, so with the official trailer out and the movie that much closer to reality, fans couldn’t contain their excitement.
I dunno if I want to cry or squee. 🥹#Wicked has been my favorite musical from the day it came to Broadway & I have so many amazing feels right now!
I cannot wait

I’ve never seen the musical, barely know any of the songs, Glee was my entry point to Defying Gravity, And I still screamed and got emotional watching this https://t.co/nBtus5Q6J3

BroBible dot com’s own Cass Anderson was among those who couldn’t contain their excitement.
Even people who have never seen or heard any music from the show were excited about the movie.
You guys I have never seen Wicked and I couldn’t tell you how any of the songs go…but god damn if I didn’t watch that trailer with baited breathe and true excitement because it looks like an absolutely PERFECT movie https://t.co/JbXZ71XUn1

There is, however, one major problem. Universal Studios previously stated that the musical, which has a run time of around 2.5 hours, is set to be split into two parts of the big screen. The sequel is scheduled to release in late November 2025.
But nowhere in the trailer does it mention that fact.
This is the craziest entry yet in the “trailer for a musical that doesn’t acknowledge it’s a musical” genre. They think their audience is people who don’t know WICKED is a musical? It’s such a famous musical! One of their two leads in a freaking pop star! https://t.co/1CCMpIXCUp

Also notable is the fact that nowhere in the movie (or the trailer) is James Corden featured. Corden drew the ire of musical fans everywhere with his performance in Cats (2019).
The official trailer already has over 150,000 views on YouTube in over an hour and more than 20,000 likes on Twitter. So it’s safe to say people are a little fired up.
