Insiders close to production told TMZ that the Movie & TV Awards will skip 2024.

Although it is unclear why the network is canceling this year’s ceremony, the SAG-AFTRA and Writers Guild of America strikes possibly contributed to the postponement.

The event will return next year with an updated format.

Drew Barrymore, 49, agreed to host the 2024 edition after skipping out last year’s show, according to Variety.

‘CHOOSING TO WAIT’

In May 2023, Drew stepped down from the hosting gig in support of the striking Writers Guild members.

“I have listened to the writers, and in order to truly respect them, I will pivot from hosting the MTV Movie & TV Awards live in solidarity with the strike,” the actress said in her statement at the time.

“Everything we celebrate and honor about movies and television is born out of their creation.”

“And until a solution is reached, I am choosing to wait, but I’ll be watching from home and hope you will join me,” she continued.

“And I can’t wait to be a part of this next year when I can truly celebrate everything that MTV has created, which is a show that allows fans to choose who the awards go to and is truly inclusive,” the statement concluded.

Held at The Barker Hangar in Los Angeles, the award show still aired in May 2023 without a host.

The talent interviews and the red-carpet event were also canceled.

Due to the writer’s strike, the live portion of the award show was canceled, and only its pre-taped segments aired.

Actors such as Pedro Pascal, 49, and Jennifer Coolidge, 62, received their awards at their homes.

Overall, viewers were not thrilled with the final result and slammed MTV on X, formerly known as Twitter.

The 2023 MTV Movie & TV Awards

Here’s how the executive producer of the MTV Movie & TV Awards planned the hostless 2023 edition:

In last year’s discussion with Variety, Bruce Gillmer, the president of music, music talent, programming, and events at Paramount Global, planned to address the strike.

The Movie & TV Awards “won’t dwell” on the strike, and planned “on delivering for the fans.”

There would still be a live performance and awards given out, with pre-taped acceptance speeches.

“We’ve got backups to our backups,” Bruce said.

“And we’re planning on keeping as many of the signature elements of the show intact.”

“We will have a live audience and it will still be a live event,” he continued.

“Different, with more pre-taped packages and so forth, which are scalable, but it’ll still have that live event feel,” he concluded

Although some of the originally scheduled talent might not show up due to the strike, Bruce mentioned athletes, celebrity chefs, and influencers were not affected and could fill in.

While supportive of Drew’s decision, Bruce welcomed her back as the hostess for 2024.

‘TERRIBLE PRODUCTION’

“Worst award show ever,” one critic mocked.

“Wow! MTV has really fallen off… this has got to be the worst awards show I’ve ever seen.” another added.

“What a terrible production this is,” a third noted.

“It should’ve been postponed until the writers came back or at least a Zoom fan audience was assembled,” a fourth person commented.
