Sicily’s Mt. Etna is once again erupting and spewing volcano high into the sky in a spectacular display. It wasn’t all that long ago when Mount Etna was erupting in August and gaining global attention from the incredible lava displays but this time around, in Winter, it’s a whole new ballgame.
Mount Etna which sits atop the Sicilian city of Catania is indisputably one of the most famous volcanoes on the planet. The lore surrounding this volcano can be see in classical Greek and Roman literature with the ancient cultures believing the God of Blacksmithing, Hephaestus, maintained his forge underneath the volcano. With the deep history, there’s something special about when Mt. Etan spews lava but it’s even better in Winter when the mountain is covered in snow and there are videos of skiers flying past the moving lava.
Videos of the latest Mt. Etna eruption and spectacular lava displays have hit YouTue and social media. This first video from Threads shows skiers mere feet away from the lava:
Another video, from X (née Twitter), shows drone footage of Mount Etna’s spectacular lava flow plowing down the mountain at full steam. This might be my favorite of the three clips:
Drones captured spectacular footage of Italy’s Mount Etna erupting this week, spewing a column of smoke and ash into the sky and sending streams of lava to the surface. pic.twitter.com/xnCHwOjfQ4

And to round it out, here is a third video of the spectacular nighttime lava display erupting out of Mt. Etna in Sicily right now:
The Mount Etna eruption back in August was equally spectacular just in different ways. If you scroll back to the top of this article there’s a link to my coverage in the first paragraph. That eruption was straight out of Lord of the Rings.
