YouTube star MrBeast is hitting back after critics put him on blast for building a hospital in Ghana to provide medical care for former child slaves.
Jimmy ‘MrBeast‘ Donaldson is YouTube’s most-subscribed content creator and one of the world’s most famous influencers, best known for his big-budget videos and massive cash giveaways.
While it’s no secret that he’s got deep pockets (despite massive losses on his most ambitious projects), he’s not hoarding the wealth for himself.
MrBeast launched his very own charity, ‘Beast Philanthropy,’ in 2021. Since then, the nonprofit has managed to open a food bank to feed local communities, funded 1,000 people’s cataract surgeries, and provided 20,000 children with their first pair of shoes, among many other charitable ventures.
MrBeast launched his own charity called ‘Beast Philanthropy,’ which first tackled food disparity in his local communities.
MrBeast slams backlash over building hospital in Ghana
Lately, the YouTuber has been bent on tackling child slavery in Africa, and revealed on April 6 that he’d built a surgical center in central Ghana to serve former child slaves of the country’s fishing industry.
MrBeast partnered with Ghana Make a Difference, a charitable organization that provides “shelter, education and medical care to children who have been enslaved, endangered or abandoned.”
Donaldson learned that children within the GMAD program struggled to receive medical attention due to the lack of medical facilities in the area and extremely long wait times for those nearest to them.
To help combat this issue, MrBeast funded the construction of a surgical center right in the GMAD compound, allowing the organization to service children within their local community.
While MrBeast’s video revealing the hospital received plenty of praise on YouTube, critics across other social platforms had a negative interpretation of the influencer’s latest charitable project.
“How about you help Americans if you’re gonna virtue signal for profit?” the top comment underneath MrBeast’s X post reads.
The YouTuber was quick to clap back, reminding the commenter that Beast Philanthropy provides millions of meals to Americans every year.
“We do routine food drives in America and give millions of meals away for free to Americans each year,” he replied. “If I listed out all the projects we’ve done in America this tweet would be a book. Yet every time I help people in Africa, my top reply is ‘I don’t help my own country’ lol.”
MrBeast has undertaken numerous projects to help Americans in the past, most recently partnering with The Phoenix to help raise funds to rehabilitate citizens struggling with addiction.
This is far from the first time MrBeast has faced backlash over his philanthropic work. In fact, he’s come under fire numerous times after unveiling big projects, with some accusing him of “exploiting” people in need for social media “clout,” rather than quietly doing good works without sharing them online.
This is just the latest big project MrBeast has undertaken in Africa after he started giving away free breakfasts at schools as part of his year-long initiative to help end child slavery on the continent.
