Things got pretty scary when Disney headed down to Austin for this year’s SXSW. But it was the good kind of scary. During its “The Future of World-Building at Disney” panel, the Mouse House debuted a new animatic concept video for the upcoming Monsters, Inc. roller coaster coming to Hollywood Studios. It will be Disney’s first vertical/suspended roller coaster ever. This attraction will generate screams even before it starts because the ride will also feature Disney’s first-ever vertical lift.
If you ever found yourself jealous of Boo getting to swing around on a door with Mike and Sully, Walt Disney World is soon going to let you live out your Monsters, Inc. dreams. A new E-ticket roller coaster will serve as the signature attraction at the upcoming Hollywood Studios: Monstropolis area. The all-new land is coming to the park in the spot currently occupied by The Muppets.

Now Disney has shown how guests will board the coaster. Pixar Chief Creative Officer Pete Docter and Imagineer Michael Hundgen offered a glimpse of the attraction’s unique start when they stopped by SXSW. Beginning the ride will be a ride unto itself, literally, in this case. The load area for Disney’s first-ever suspended coaster will also include the company’s first-ever vertical lift. The animatic video, which follows the previous release of models showing the ride’s general layout, shows off two loading areas. Each is double-sided. The four seating areas will help speed up the process. As will shooting people straight up into the air. Once guests are strapped in they’ll get hoisted up just like in Monsters, Inc. The ride will then recreate the experience Boo had when she went through the door vault.

The Disney Parks Blog noted that Hundgen said, “Imagineers have been itching to turn that moment into an attraction ever since we saw it for the first time.” It’s easy to understand why. It’s also easy to see why this ride could be really special.
The Monsters, Inc. coaster is going to create a whole lot of screams. The good kind of screams.
