The time has come for Tom Cruise’s Ethan Hunt to take on one last wild stunt in Mission: Impossible 8. The movie, once called Dead Reckoning—Part II, has revealed its new title to be Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning. That certainly sounds… very final. Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning has also shared its first teaser trailer, and it doesn’t make us feel any less like the Mission: Impossible franchise may truly be coming to an end. But if this is the last of these much-loved action films, it certainly seems like it will be an epic one. Complete with icy underwater kisses, heightened emotion, and, of course, hanging out of helicopters, this Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning trailer has it all.
You can check it out in full below.
In addition to the trailer, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning has shared a very brief synopsis to clue us into what’s coming in the film. Cryptically, the movie’s description notes, “Our lives are the sum of our choices. Tom Cruise is Ethan Hunt in Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning.” Fair enough!
If you’ll recall, we at Nerdist really loved Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One. So we absolutely have high hopes for its spiritual (if not literal) second act. We expect this movie to be something of a love letter to the franchise as a whole, as the trailer for Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning takes us all the way back to the OG 1996 Mission: Impossible movie. It’s hard to believe that but 1996 was almost 30 years ago now! But has indeed been 28 years since the first Mission: Impossible film. That’s quite a cinematic legacy.
But although the franchise and its actors have gotten older, they certainly show no signs of slowing in Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning and its trailer. We’re seeing all our favorite stunt hallmarks of a Mission: Impossible movie; and, the underwater kiss in a pool of ice honestly feels like it will become one of our favorites.
Of course, this may not be Ethan Hunt’s swan song just yet. A good franchise, as we know, may never die. Although the title is suggestive, there has been no confirmation that Mission: Impossible is signing off with this “final” stunt. We’ll have to watch this movie before we decide which way we want the chips to fall. But we’re totally up from a Mission: Impossible x John Wick crossover after Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning if anyone is in the mood.
Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning arrives in theaters on May 23, 2025. It stars some huge names, including, of course, Tom Cruise, Hayley Atwell, Ving Rhames, and Simon Pegg. Additionally, Vanessa Kirby, Pom Klementieff, Shea Whigham, and Angela Bassett will return to the franchise. Nick Offerman and Hannah Waddingham will also star. And we’ll see Esai Morales, Mariela Garriga, Henry Czerny, Holt McCallany, Janet McTeer, Greg Tarzan Davis, Charles Parnell, and Frederick Schmidt in the film as well.
If you need us, we’ll be watching the Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning trailer another hundred times.
