Reed Timmer PhD, arguably the most famous name in storm chasing and possibly the second most famous person when it comes to extreme weather events behind only Jim Cantore, was “just west of” Gary, Minnesota on the border of South Dakota and capture truly wild tornado footage. Timmer called this Minnesota tornado the “most amazing intercept ever” and added that is the “most insane tornado (he has) ever seen” during his 30 year career as a storm chaser.
The renowned storm chaser had been in the Dakotas, Minnesota, and Wisconsin for much of the last week as the perfect weather conditions were in place to produce tornadoes. From there, he just had be at the right place at the right time by following weather patterns and that he did.
Coincidentally, the first clip I saw yesterday’s storm chasing action is from the car behind Reed Timmer’s. It calls this ‘Gary, South Dakota’ but Gary sits on the border so it is likely this tornado was in Minnesota and just attributed to wherever the chasers were in the minutes before. The ‘Dominator’ storm chasing vehicle he uses is practically inside of the storm at one point:
In his full clip on YouTube, Reed Timmer PhD called this one “the most insane tornado” he has ever seen in his 30 year career as a storm chaser. That’s how surreal this footage is. And there’s a LOT of it. Jump ahead like 60 seconds in the video to get right into the action:
After the flurry of tornado activity on Sunday across western Minnesota, thousands of residents are still without power. The National Weather Service confirmed there were at least 4 tornado touchdowns in the region around Carver County.
I cannot stress caution enough when there are tornado warnings in the area. These are professional storm chasers. Reed Timmer PhD is a certified meteorologist and has been doing this for decades. Do not risk your life standing outside to see a storm!
