Metallica came to Blacksburg, VA on Wednesday as part of its M72 World Tour to play in front of more than 65,000 fans in Lane Stadium, home of the Virginia Tech football team.
The scenes from the concert were insane as attendees belted out “Enter Sandman,” a tune heard before every Hokies home game. It produced an electric atmosphere that’s typically only experienced seven times in the fall.
Every fan jumps in unison as the music blares from the loudspeakers to welcome the Hokies onto the field. It’s a spectacle unlike any other in college football.
The entrance is often regarded as one of the best in the sport, and for good reason. On Wednesday, a similar scene played out – but with a twist!

The stadium was packed full of both Virginia Tech and Metallica fans. There wasn’t an empty seat in the house. As the familiar, haunting intro to “Enter Sandman” began, the crowd erupted.

An absolute frenzy broke out in Blacksburg that could be heard very clearly from outside the venue walls. Virginia Tech’s social media team posted a video from the parking lot at Lane Stadium. That, too, was a sight to see!
Obviously, it wasn’t the only song played during the concert. The legendary rock and roll band has dozens of hits in their never-ending catalog. It was certainly the most popular on Wednesday night, though.
Virginia Tech fans got a preview of what to expect during the home football opener on September 6th vs. Vanderbilt. This environment might actually top those seen on Saturdays this fall.
