A behind-the-scenes photo of Robert Downey Jr. on the set of Avengers: Doomsday has Marvel fans panicking about the MCU’s upcoming portrayal of the character, arguably the most iconic villain on their roster.

While casting Robert Downey Jr. — who famously played Tony Stark/Iron Man for over a decade in the Marvel Cinematic Universe — was already considered to be a risky if not outright creatively bereft decision from Marvel Studios, a BTS pic of RDJ with CGI dots on his face has sent the worry of some fans into overdrive.

Doctor Doom’s mask is undeniably one of the most iconic faces in all of comic books and the idea of Marvel resorting to CGI to bring it to life as fans understandably up in arms.

It’s worth noting that another section of fans are making a counterpoint, reasoning that the CGI dots are not for Doctor Doom’s mask, but Victor Von Doom’s disfigured face. Still, given Marvel’s history of nanotech masks — Iron Man, Star Lord, Spider-Man, and more — it’s reasonable of fans to assume the worst.

It goes without saying that Avengers: Doomsday is a massive gambit (pun intended, as Channing Tatum’s Gambit will literally appear in the film) as the film is not only featuring Downey Jr’s Doctor Doom but will feature dozens of Avengers and will be tasked with setting up Avengers: Secret Wars, which is a film that has the potential to end the MCU as we know it.

So far, however, from the lazily way in which Marvel announced the cast — a drawn-out, hours-long live stream of moive-set chairs with the actors names on them — to Doom’s potentially CGI mask, the response from fans has been tepid.

Currently, the confirmed cast of Avengers: Doomsday is as follows (the vague plot is reportedly that the Avengers, New Avengers, Wakandans and X-Men ((the OG ones)) team up to fight Doom):

Chris Hemsworth, Vanessa Kirby, Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Letitia Wright, Paul Rudd, Wyatt Russell, Tenoch Huerta Mejía, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Simu Liu, Florence Pugh, Kelsey Grammer, Lewis Pullman, Danny Ramirez, Joseph Quinn, David Harbour, Winston Duke, Hannah John-Kamen, Tom Hiddleston, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Alan Cumming, Rebecca Romijn, James Marsden, Channing Tatum, Pedro Pascal, and Robert Downey Jr.

Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to be released in movie theaters on the United States on Friday, May 1, 2026.
