McDonald’s fry lovers can rejoice. The iconic fast food chain is introducing a new size above Large, but as big as these menu items are, there’s an even bigger catch.
Back in 2004, McDonald’s started to phase out its supersized fries and drinks, which were essentially extra large versions of the existing menu items.
The restaurant claimed the reason came down to “menu simplification” and that not many customers were paying extra for the larger products.
Well, starting on May 21, McDonald’s is letting customers upgrade their drinks and fries to a new ‘Grand’ size, but only for those who live in Japan.
McDonald’s Japan reveals ‘Grand’ fries and drinks bigger than a Large
According to the chain, the new Grand Fry will be 1.7x bigger than the Medium size and still a step up from the existing Large.
While customers can upgrade their combo to the Grand Fry for ¥100 (a nice $0.69 USD) it can also be purchased separately for ¥480 (around $3.30) USD).
A single Grand Drink, whether it’s Coke, Sprite, or Fanta will set customers back ¥420, or $2.88 for those in the United States.
So far, this promotion appears to only be available in the Land of the Rising Sun, and it’s not clear if the rest of the world will be getting this option any time soon.
That said, McDonald’s has been known to run tests with new menu items in select regions before bringing them to the United States.
For example, the chain’s biggest burger yet, the Big Arch, is currently available in Canada but it’s yet to launch in the US.
But, even if McDonald’s does bring back larger fries and drinks to the US, that doesn’t mean it won’t put an end to trying its luck at offering healthier options.
In addition to the Big Arch, the chain is also testing out a revamped version of the McVeggie burger after scrapping the McPlant and salad across the United States.
