Despite the fact that Barbie is already armed to the teeth with A-listers, there’s one that Margot Robbie — the star and producer of the film — wishes they could’ve landed. And that’s Wonder Woman herself, Gal Gadot.
According to Robbie, she wanted to cast the “impossibly beautiful” Gadot because she has ‘Barbie energy.’ And while we aren’t quite sure what Barbie energy is — not to be confused with what Ryan Gosling called his ‘Kenergy’ — we know that the idea of seeing Robbie and Gadot share a screen together is enough to make our brains melt.
In fact, not only does Robbie believe that Gadot possesses Barbie energy, but she thinks the 38-year-old Israeli actress is the embodiment of it.
During the casting process, Gerwig and Robbie looked for “Barbie energy,” a certain ineffable combination of beauty and exuberance they concluded is embodied in Gal Gadot.
“Gal Gadot is Barbie energy” Robbie said. “Because Gal Gadot is so impossibly beautiful, but you don’t hate her for being that beautiful, because she’s so genuinely sincere, and she’s so enthusiastically kind, that it’s almost dorky. It’s like right before being a dork.” [via Vogue]
Unfortunately for Robbie, the Barbie production, movie fans, and the human race in general, Gadot’s busy schedule meant she couldn’t sign on to the film.
Alongside Margot Robbie as Barbie and Ryan Gosling as her doting boyfriend Ken, Barbie boasts a star-studded ensemble cast that features Kingsley Ben-Adir, Emma Mackey, Michael Cera, Simu Liu, Issa Rae, Kate McKinnon, Dua Lipa, Helen Mirren, Will Ferrell, and more.
Barbie will release in the United States on Friday, July 21, which is famously the same day that Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer hits theaters. Don’t worry though, movie fans, as Matt Damon has given you permission to see both.
And since you’re here, might as well watch the trailers for both, which are looking like they’ll be the best movies of the summer alongside Tom Cruise’s Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, of course).
