‘Mamma Mia!’ Star Myra McFadyen Dies at 68

Myra McFadyen, a Glasgow-born actress best known for her roles in popular romantic comedies like Mamma Mia! and Made of Honor, has died. No specific cause or date of death was provided. She was 68.

McFadyen is well-known for her roles in both Mamma Mia! films, which are inspired by ABBA’s music. She also starred in Patrick Dempsey’s 2008 movie Made of Honor and appeared in a 2020 version of Emma.

“It’s with immense sadness we announce the passing of our witty and wonderful client Myra McFadyen,” UK talent agency Michelle Braidman Associates wrote in a statement. “We are proud to have represented her for over 30 years. Myra was a terrific actress, known for her extensive and varied theatre work throughout the UK including her beloved Scotland and latterly her roles in film and television.”

“We mourn the loss of such a talented artist. She will be much missed by us and the profession. We send our love and heartfelt condolences to all Myra’s family and friends at this sad time,” they added.

Myra studied at Glasgow’s Conservatoire (formerly RSAMD) and pursued mime in Paris. She later took a position at the National Theatre in London, where she gained recognition for her performances in pantomimes and Christmas shows.

In 2008, McFadyen portrayed Elena in Mamma Mia!, alongside a star-studded cast that included Amanda Seyfried, Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, and Stellan Skarsgård. She returned for the ensemble in the 2018 sequel, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again!, and has also performed in stage adaptations of the musical.

Meanwhile, on TV, she made her mark in 2013 by appearing in NBC’s Dracula and graced several European productions, including Teachers, Monarch of the Glen, and Ruth Rendell Mysteries.

The Citizens Theatre in Glasgow also paid tribute to McFadyen.

“We are sad to hear of the passing of the brilliantly talented Myra McFadyen,” they wrote on X. “Known to Citz audiences for her roles in many productions including The ChoirHayfever, and Glasgow Girls, she will be remembered for her captivating performances across stage, tv and film.”

 “She was a legend in Scottish theatre – a terrific actress with a gorgeous voice,” the theater’s artistic director Dominic Hill added.
