Malin aims for “three workouts during the week on average” while she is shooting, she told Good Housekeeping. “My fitness routine is fairly relaxed, but I definitely pick up the pace as soon as a film comes along, especially one that’s a bit more physical,” she added to Parade.
Malin told Parade that she likes to maintain variety with exercise. “I’ve been doing a lot of online workouts, and I love Obé Fitness. It’s an app that has everything from Pilates and yoga to cardio boxing and dance classes,” she told Parade. “I like to change it up because some days I feel stronger and want to do weights. Other days, I feel like I need to stretch it out. We have a dog and live close to Griffith Park in Los Angeles, so I also go hiking a lot.”
“I try to take a moment for myself every day,” Malin revealed to Parade. “I took a course on Transcendental Meditation a while back, and I really enjoy that when I have time.” She also likes to get her vitamin D. “Getting out in nature has been great for me, and exercise is always good for my brain. I can wake up feeling groggy and tired and not ready for the day, but as soon as I get some movement in, it shifts my whole perspective and capacity to deal with the day,” she added. And, she is a big fan of talking it out. “When I need it, I definitely tap into a therapist. And sometimes, it’s just indulging in a glass of wine—that’s great for my mental health.”
Malin’s version of the 80-20 diet is a little different than most. “My goal is to have 80 percent of my diet be vegetables and fresh fruit,” she told Parade. “Whenever I cook a meal, I go to the fridge and say, ‘What veg are we going to have today and what am I going to accompany the veg with?’ Then I’ll toss in some protein and good carbs, like sweet potatoes or quinoa.”
However, she’s a sucker for a few less healthy foods. “With that said, if there’s a cheese platter in front of me, I’m eating all of it. It doesn’t matter if I’m going to get a stomach ache. Same with Nutella. I’ll just spoon it out like it’s ice cream. I also love giving myself treats, like chocolate, as rewards when I work out. Then, if you didn’t do the workout, you can say, ‘I don’t really deserve chocolate.’ It really works for me—small rewards along the way,” she told Parade.
You won’t find Malin waiting until later in the day to eat her first meal. “Intermittent fasting does not work for me. I know people swear by it, but I’m miserable,” she told Parade. “And I can’t do a juice fast either, there’s just no way. I get so angry. I find that small meals and snacks along the way work best for me, just keeping my insulin levels on an even keel. And everyone’s different. My husband does intermittent fasting, loves it and feels great from it.”
Malin likes to get her workouts over with. “I know if I get up and do a little workout, I’m going to have more energy; I’m going to be more present for him. I also feel better after a workout and eating well and that in itself becomes an inspiration. I know we all say we don’t have the time. But there’s always time to be carved out in our day. We just have to find it and plan it. For me, the trick is getting it in first thing in the morning,” she told Parade.
“I always need breakfast,” the star confessed to Good Housekeeping. “I need that energy to start the day, and it saves me from making bad decisions when the mid-morning hunger kicks in.” She might also eat eggs or oatmeal.
One way Malin keeps herself from snacking on junk? “I stock my fridge with nutritious snacks that are easy to grab and go because I’m constantly on the move – whether it’s on set or doing outdoor activities with my son,” she told Good Housekeeping.
“My go-to healthy drink is: Coconut water or Kombucha. Good probiotics. Feels good. Tastes good, too,” Malin told Stylecaster. She also loves a green smoothie for breakfast, she added to Good Housekeeping.
