Lorde has made her comeback official by announcing that “What Was That,” her first new song in four years, is on the way.
“My new song What Was That. Out soon,” Lorde wrote in the caption of an Instagram post featuring what could be the single’s artwork.
Shot by Talia Chetrit, the photo shows the Kiwi artist with double braids while wearing a bright red t-shirt, as she gazes intensely at the camera with water dripping down her face.
Last week, Lorde teased the track with her first-ever TikTok post. “Since I was 17, I gave you everything,” she sings in the clip. “Now we wake from a dream, well baby, what was that?”

Whenever “What Was That” arrives, it will mark Lorde’s first new music since her 2021 album, Solar Power. Last year, she released a Talking Heads cover and hopped on a remix of Charli XCX’s “Girl, so confusing.”
Over the weekend, she joined Charli XCX on stage at Coachella to perform the “Girl, so confusing” remix.
