After three years of breakup rumors, Liza Soberano confirms she had long split up with reel-to-real partner Enrique Gil
MANILA, Philippines – Liza Soberano confirmed that she and Enrique Gil already ended their relationship three years ago.
In an August 14 episode of the YouTube podcast-documentary Can I Come In? hosted by filmmaker Sarah Bahbah, the actress described Gil as her first love, but said she had long wanted to reveal their breakup.
“I’ve been honestly itching to tell people this because I haven’t been very truthful. Quen hasn’t been very truthful. Quen and I broke up. We’ve been broken up for almost three years now,” she said.
The 27-year-old actress said they initially kept their breakup under wraps as Gil had asked her not to say anything about it first.
“I don’t want to speak for him but I think it was coming from a place of not wanting it to be real. And at the same time, I agree to that, because I also didn’t want it to be real… I was so afraid that if people found out that we weren’t together anymore, my career would go bad or people just wouldn’t love me anymore,” she admitted.
Soberano further added that it was her love team with Gil, known as LizQuen, that helped her climb out of poverty and escape all the abuse she had been experiencing, as it allowed her to support herself financially.
She added that being in a love team with Gil allowed her to do things that she otherwise couldn’t do before without others trying to tear her down.
“The love team was a safety net but also like an armor for me,” she said.
The Lisa Frankenstein star also revealed that she and Gil had feelings for each other even before they became a love team. The two were under the same manager then at the start of their love story.
Speculations of their breakup started as early as 2022. Soberano denied the rumors in June 2022, saying that she and Gil were “totally fine.”
Gil appeared to have indirectly debunked the speculations when he posted his birthday greeting for Soberano in January 2023, referring to her as his “best friend and baby.”
In July 2023, Gil further denied the rumors by saying that he and Soberano were “good,” adding that they were both just busy with their own projects.
Soberano’s confirmation comes over two years after Ogie Diaz claimed in May 2023 that they had broken up. At the time, Diaz said that it was the actress’ “choice” to part ways with Gil so she could focus on pursuing her Hollywood career, while the actor had supposedly fought to keep their relationship alive.
In February 2024, Gil denied the rumors of the breakup anew, affirming that he and Soberano were happy, but just really busy.
Soberano and Gil began dating in 2014, but only revealed their relationship in 2019. Some of their projects together included the films and series Just the Way You Are, My Ex and Whys, Dolce Amore, Make it With You, and Forevermore. – Rappler.com
