There is no question that Lily Gladstone has had an amazing year thanks to Martin Scorsese and the opportunity to star in Killers Of The Flower Moon opposite Leonardo Di Caprio and Robert De Niro. As the first ever Native American actress to receive an Oscar nomination in the lead category, she has already made history and she is well aware of what it all means, not just for her but so many others who are sharing in this particular moment. But for her it is really just the beginning of change in the industry and the way it looks at Native Americans.
A winner of numerous critics awards already, plus Best Actress in a Drama at the Golden Globes, Gladstone is now Oscar nominated as well as being up for two SAG awards including as part of the Outstanding Cast recognition. She joins me for this episode of my Deadline video series The Actor’s Side to talk about the remarkable year she has had, her career in indie films and why that will continue, why it was important to be acknowledged as the lead actress in Killers Of The Flower Moon even as some advised that she might have an automatic win in the supporting category, plus the inspiration for her decision to go into acting. Turns out it was her infatuation with the Ewoks (!), an infatuation she says she shares with many young Native Americans. So will she ever get to play one? All of this and more are addressed in our conversation.
