Funk maestros Lettuce released a new digital single, “Star Children,” a nod toward Parliament-Funkadelic’s brazen keyboardist and synth ace Bernie Worrell. The track was first offered on the Japanese CD version of 2008’s Rage; however, it has not been available on streaming platforms or vinyl until now.
“Star Children” spotlights the fused force of Lettuce’s funk-focused approach, imparted by the group’s former keyboardist/returning player and synth lead, Neal Evans, as well as Adam Deitch, Erick “Jesus” Coomes, and Adam “Shmeeans” Smirnoff. The track functions as a synthesizer-laden ripper accentuated by horns, bass, guitar riffs, and complimentary melodic breakdowns that focus on the band’s unique brand of instrumentation.
Smirnoff says, “It is one of the few recordings that featured Neal Evans on an Analog Modular Synthesizer that was part of Joel Hamilton’s Studio G. The band’s love for Bootsy [Collins], George Clinton, P-Funk, Garry Shider, and Bernie are not only evident through the music, but through the namesake of this Lettuce Classic Vault Release …. Star Children.”
Providing additional context, Adam Deitch tells folks, “‘Star Children’ references Star Child, the legendary singer of Parliament Funkadelic. We are all children of the stars.”
In addition to the digital single, “Star Children” will be included on Lettuce’s 7” record, part of their new collectible vinyl series slated to roll out consistently over the coming months. Available in green and classic black, the band will continue releasing music from past sessions via the vinyl series.
