Pop stars, they’re just like us: Instead of hanging out with the internet’s baddest bitches or dancing so hard that her shoelaces won’t stay tied, Charli XCX has spent the holiday season catching up on movies. Charli shared as much on her newly-public Letterboxd account, which is full of charmingly short reviews.
On Christmas Day, she posted a five-star review of 2021’s The Tragedy of Macbeth, writing “watched this whilst george built lego.” George is presumably George Daniel, producer and drummer for The 1975, and on her page he becomes a recurring character. For example, after watching 1931’s Frankenstein she commented “the monster kinda gives george vibes <3.”
Charli XCX has seen several of the upcoming award contenders, giving Challengers, Conclave, and Nosferatu five stars, throwing a ‘like’ for Anora, and dryly noting in an unranked review of A Complete Unknown that “there were a lot of songs in this!” As for the Martha Stewart documentary Martha, Charli only wrote “martha is brat.”
Speaking of that other brat, Charli’s new record made it pretty high on our list of the 50 Best Albums of 2024, and her work also appeared on the 200 Best Songs of 2024 and the Consequence Reader’s Survey.
