Leftover Salmon have released its 11th studio album, Let’s Party About It, via Compass Records. The 11-track collection coincides with the ensemble’s ongoing Jade Anniversary, 35 years as a band. It bolsters their veteran status as bluegrass-rooted purveyors with panache for extemporizing compositions and displays their collective prowess through tonally rich and expressive material.
Let’s Party About It is Leftover Salmon’s first and only album written collectively in a single session. For the initial task, the band—Vince Herman, Drew Emmitt, Greg Garrison, Andy Thorn, Alwyn Robinson, and Jay Starling—were joined by longtime friend and songwriter Aaron Raitiere to hammer out a set that elicited the vitality and vivacious spirit earned after 35 years.
The collection features guest slots from bluegrass greats such as Del McCoury (vocals), Sam Bush (fiddle, mandolin), Jason Carter (fiddle), and Dave Matthews Band’s Jeff Coffin (saxophone), building on the genre’s collaborative ethos, a feature of the Leftover Salmon experience.
Before today’s official unveiling, the band worked up to the full-length album arrival by delivering singles, including the Herman-penned “Big Wheel,” conveying, “The world keeps turning. Find a spot to watch it fly by and ride the wheel.” They also shared their new bluegrass original featuring McCoury, “Twisted Pines,” which Emmitt describes as “like an old traditional,” and “To me, it’s a metaphor for the changing seasons and life in general.”
The group will observe their achievement with fans on Monday, May 26, at Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison, Colo., splitting a bill with Kitchen Dwellers. The night also features High Country Horns and special guests Clay Street Unit. Purchase tickets now.
