TV comedy icon Larry David, best known for his work on Seinfeld and Curb Your Enthusiasm, widely regarded as being two of the funniest TV shows of all time, is not only returning to the medium, but HBO, as well. According to reports, David will be writing and starring in a sketch comedy series for the network that’ll be produced by former President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama.
The new project from Larry David is being described as a limited sketch comedy series about major events in American history and will consist of six episodes.
Here is the official logline, per HBO: “President and Mrs. Obama wanted to honor America’s 250th anniversary and celebrate the unique history of our nation on this special occasion…But then Larry David called.”
“David is writing the series with Jeff Schaffer, who was the showrunner, executive producer, and frequent director on Curb. David will also star in the six-episode series.”
“Both David and Schaffer will executive produce the half-hour show, with Schaffer also set to direct. Barack and Michelle Obama are executive producing under their Higher Ground Productions banner along with Vinnie Malhotra and Ethan Lewis.” [via Variety]
Alongside the announcement of the project, the 78-year-old comedy icon also released a statement joking that he is returning to television after failing as a beekeeper. David’s previous project, the beloved comedy series Curb Your Enthusiasm, wrapped up its 12-season run in 2024 after first premiering in 1999.
“Once Curb ended, I celebrated with a three-day foam party. After a violent allergic reaction to the suds, I yearned to return to my simple life as a beekeeper, harvesting organic honey from the wildflowers in my meadow. Alas, one day my bees mysteriously vanished. And so, it is with a heavy heart that I return to television, hoping to ease the loss of my beloved hive,” David said in a statement.
