Kristen Wiig joins me for this week’s edition of my Deadline video series, The Actor’s Side and we cover the waterfront of a comedic career that keeps creating new landmarks including her recent hilarious induction into the SNL five-timer host club on the show where she was a regular cast member between 2005 and 2012, earning four Emmy nominations during that period.
We also talk about her new and much buzzed-about Apple TV+ series, Palm Royale in which she plays a woman itching to join the elite society of Palm Beach circa late 60’s, and runs into several roadblocks on her way up the latter. A real highlight she tells me is to share so many scenes with the legendary Carol Burnett, including a few where Burnett had to be basically comatose in bed. We also talk about many other things, among them her smash hit comedy, Bridesmaids which earned her and her co-writer Annie Mumolo an Original Screenplay Oscar nomination, but which will never get a sequel despite becoming one of the blockbuster comedies of all time. Wiig explains why she wants to let it be what it is.
She also takes a stroll down memory lane in explaining how so many of her signature characters like The Target Lady, Aunt Sue, Aunt Linda the film critic, Gilly, Dooneese, and others came to life. Wiig also tells us about the creation and making of cult favorite, Barb & Star Go To Vista Del Mar, playing Cheetah in Wonder Woman, returning to Despicable Me with this summer’s sequel, and so much more.
