Gallacher loves the way intermittent fasting makes her feel. “I’ll often do intermittent fasting where I don’t eat before midday,” she says. “Then, I’ll stop eating at around 6pm. It’s a small eating window but it encourages my body to naturally go into ketosis so it can rejuvenate overnight. Of course, it’s not always practical – if I go out for a meal I can’t do it. But, in general, intermittent fasting makes me feel so much better.”
Gallacher appreciates both the mental and physical aspects of regular exercise. “It’s important for me to stay fit, healthy and active,” she says. “I know when I don’t do my fitness during the week, I start to feel a bit down. It’s so important to be kind to your body and listen to it. We go through different phases in life and things change. There are always stressful times when we’ve got different things going on, so we need to be kind to ourselves and find what helps us feel good.”
Gallacher keeps her fridge stocked with beetroot and kefir milk to help keep her gut healthy. “Some people find that kefir improves their digestion, potentially due to its probiotic content,” says registered nutritionist Jo Lewin. “Probiotics may help restore balance in the gut, thereby improving digestion. The fermentation process also helps to break down the lactose in milk, so there is some evidence to suggest that kefir may be tolerated by those who suffer from lactose intolerance. However, you should speak to your GP if you think you may be lactose intolerant.”
Gallacher works out with a personal trainer several times a week. “So, I try and visit my personal trainer, Mel Deane around three times a week if I can make it,” she says. “He keeps me extremely motivated to reach my goals. He offers me a wonderful mixture of cardio and weight training which I really enjoy. When I don’t visit Mel, I make sure I get a good 30-40 minutes on the training bike at home a couple of times a week, or if the weather is decent then go for short runs or take the dog for a walk around near home.”
Gallacher prefers resistance training to the treadmill. “I get a lot of my cardio workouts from weights and resistance training,” she says. “Not necessarily – not plodding away on a treadmill. I sit on the bike and warm-up for a bit, but then it’s lots of press-ups, squats, lots of things really. We really like to work all of the muscle groups as much as possible and just, that’s how we train.”
