There aren’t many people who look back at 2020 with fond memories, and KFC certainly didn’t do the world any favors by deciding to remove its beloved potato wedges from the menu midway through the year. However, they’re making their grand return for a limited time, and the hopes of a nation now rest on the shoulders of people in the Tampa Bay area.
The menu at KFC originally boasted fairly standard french fries before the chain attempted to set itself apart from the rest of the pack by switching to thicker potato wedges in the early 1990s.
That ended up being a pretty solid pivot based on how many customers came to enjoy the deep-fried sides that featured a sizeable amount of potato and a pleasantly seasoned and crunchy exterior in every bite, and they were a staple for close to three decades before things took a fairly unexpected turn.
At the end of 2019, KFC announced it was preparing to discontinue the potato wedges in favor of the “Secret Recipe” fries that replaced them in July of the following year.
In hindsight, that was a portent of the grim future that awaited us in 2020, and while the new offering ended up being pretty solid, there’s zero doubt the chain would have ended up higher on my list of the best fast food french fries if they’d stuck with the potato wedges.
We’re nearing the fifth anniversary of that tragic loss, but it sounds like there’s a chance the wedges could come back from the dead due to an intriguing new development.
According to Southern Living, KFC started serving up potato wedges at five restaurants in the Tampa Bay area on Monday as part of a test run tentatively slated to last for two weeks. A spokesperson for the company told the outlet “They are one of KFC’s most requested menu items” while hinting they could come back on a larger scale if the ongoing trial run manages to attract enough interest.
If you’re curious, the wedges are currently being offered at KFC locations on Kennedy and Gandy Boulevards in Tampa, 34th Street in St. Petersburg, Havendale Boulevard in Auburndale, and Broadway Avenue in Bartow.
Here’s to hoping people in the area step up when it matters most.
