Twitch star Kai Cenat sparked a heated debate amongst fans after claiming that he “didn’t understand” how people became fans of YouTube idol PewDiePie.
Felix ‘PewDiePie‘ Kjellberg is one of the most-subscribed individual creators on YouTube, following Jimmy ‘MrBeast‘ Donaldson, who took the crown in June 2024 after beating out T-Series to own the site’s most-subbed channel.
Kjellberg has been creating content since 2010 and became famous for his humorous playthroughs of horror games like Amnesia before branching out into different genres like ‘Pew News’ and musical collaborations.
Now, he’s ‘semi-retired’ and living in Japan with his wife and infant son — and although he’s no longer putting out constant content, he remains a major fixture in online culture.
PewDiePie is one of YouTube’s most-subscribed creators with over 110 million subs.
Another internet star, Twitch streamer Kai Cenat, has risen to fame in the years since then, becoming one of the most famous influencers of the modern age… and he doesn’t understand his predecessor’s popularity.
Kai Cenat “can’t see” how fans got into PewDiePie
Cenat recently wrapped up his Batman Arkham marathon, where he donned a series of custom-made batsuits and played through the Arkham game series.
During the stream, Kai came forward with what he said might be an “L take,” saying he never understood how PewDiePie had so many fans.
“This may be an L take, and I apologize in advance,” he began. “But I couldn’t see how ****s got into PewDiePie. I’m sorry. …I don’t know how ****s got into that.”
Kai’s special guest, Reggie, agreed with him, admitting that he “didn’t watch” the YouTuber growing up.
“I’ll be honest — that might be an L take, though,” Kai continued. “You feel me?”
Reggie found his opinion valid, but reminded the streamer that not every content creator is everyone’s cup of tea.
“It be like that sometimes, but not everybody is for everybody,” Reggie said. “Some ****s might say that about you.”
“Facts!” Kai admitted. “For me, personally though? I don’t know.”
Kai’s remarks about PewDiePie sparked quite the debate on social media, with some defending his take while others went to bat for the Swedish YouTube star.
“Pewdiepie is an OG of YouTube, gotta give him respect,” one wrote.
“Generation gap, PewDiePie paved the way for most of these guys without them even knowing,” another argued.
“I am with Kai, I didn’t get PewDiePie,” yet another said.
Pewds hasn’t offered a response to Kai as of yet — but he’s currently living his best life being a dad to his first child, Bjorn, who was born in July 2023.
