Jon Batiste has recruited Randy Newman for his new song, “LONELY AVENUE.” The bluesy track appears on Batiste’s upcoming album, Big Money, out August 22nd via Verve/Interscope.
A cover of Doc Pomus’ classic, the song was recorded live in one take in Newman’s living room and is best known from the 1956 hit single by Ray Charles. The intimate session’s energy is captured in the accompanying music video directed by David Henry Gerson.
In the visual, the two musicians initially give passionate performances of “LONELY AVENUE” on separate sides of a ragged apartment, with Batiste drawn to the sound of Newman’s unique voice. Once they find each other, Batiste joins his musical partner at the piano, and they close out the performance together.

“Ray is my patron saint,” Batiste said about the song in a statement. “Just as the Big Money songs are in conversation with each other, I’m in conversation with Randy and Ray.”
In late August, Batiste will head out on his summer and fall “The Big Money Tour” across the United States. See the full schedule below, and get tickets here.
